Also known as 4K, Ultra HD is the term most brands now use to describe TVs that carry the next generation of pixel resolution: 3840 x 2160.

If you know your HD onions you’ll realise that these numbers exactly double the 1920 x 1080 resolution of today’s full HD TVs. But this doesn’t just mean you get twice as many pixels; a bit of GCSE Maths will tell you that squeezing 3840 x 2160 pixels into a screen actually delivers four times as many pixels as you get with a full HD screen: a mind-boggling 8,294,400, to be precise.

This predictably has a pretty profound impact on picture quality. The most obvious point is that you can simply see far more detail in Ultra HD pictures than you can in full HD ones. But the much higher level of resolution also delivers smoother colour blends and a greater sense of depth, as details can be resolved further into the distance. Overall the extra pixels in Ultra HD TVs make it feel much more like you’re watching the real world through a window rather than looking at a picture being rendered by a TV screen

So it looks like a slew of manufacturers are going to be releasing 4k res monitors this year for under $1000.

The Dell one in the link above is only $700

Could this be the year of 4k? It'll certainly reinvigorate the graphics market if so, if people want to be able to actually game at that res!

Ahh, it seems these cheaper ones are only 30Hz, so no good for gaming yet. Hopefully 60Hz ones will be out soon.

Hmmm....pretty stiff competition for the 4k monitors with this new 34" 1440x3440 monitor from LG.

Shame it's nearly $1500

Decided to go for one of these paired to my old gtx690 for under (£600), so far its Mustard all the old Cods play at above 90fps & Ghosties somewhere between 58-70 so plenty high enough to do the job (max settings of coarse )
waiting on a Data port to mini data port adapter 1.2 so I can run it at 60hz but its well playable in single player mode at the minute & for a bit of camping in mp ,
at this stage I'm giving it 8-10 loosing 1 point for connectivity & 1 for the fact its a Tn (downgrade from my dell 27 Ips).

Just got my Data port adapter cable through and shes now running @ 60hz ( multiplayer is back in business) , took some configuring ,If any ones making the jump but struggling to get it running this will probably help

Nice! Pop some pics up!

I'm moving to my new place in London this week. Once I'm there I'll need to measure up what kind of monitor setup I can have. I'm not sure I'll have room for another triple 27" setup, so I may make the jump to the 34" 1440x3440 LG that I posted above. If not, maybe I'll give 4k a shot, not sure yet...

Also, it seems AOC and Phillips are due to bring out their own 21:9 ultra wides at the £500 price point soon, could be a good deal compared to the £800 LG are asking for theirs

Yeah, ikr?! I watched the keynote last night. The monitor looks amazing, but I think they should have made it 30" if they're going to do it that res though.

Also you can only get it as an iMac right now, you can't buy it as a cinema display only yet due to bandwidth issues. Not even thunderbolt 2 can push the amount of pixels needed. A dell version is due for release soon and has to uses 2 hdmi cables I believe

2xHdmi , there not fast enough to punch through 30 fps so for gaming , you need DP 1.2 connectivity to run 60fps+ in 3840x2160, let alone any higher . so gaming is out of the question I imagine Films are fooking mustard though what ive seen on you tube in 4k is sweeeeeeeeeeeeeet !!!
