also make sure you have the latest patch: http://www.gamefront.com/files/files/8879781/cnc3_patch109_english.exe

and the no-disk crack still allows you to play online (obviously if you have a valid cd key)

Do I need the patch?

It worked fine for us last night, mine is through Steam so I assume any necessary patches get auto applied

We need 1.09 but that it. It's nice that you only need to download the one patch instead of all the sequence before too.

yea i hate that, i think they are phasing that sort of update out, if not already :-P

That patch is from 2007, if the game has always worked fine online for me before why would I need to install it now?

EDIT: I've just checked, you can log into the online part of the game and click on options you can see what version you're on. Looks like I'm already on it.
