I can't imagine it's that rubbish considering it just came out?

Interesting comment about the beta. I didn't realise all the games were being hosted on Microsoft's Azure cloud computing service

The beta was not to test the game itself really (as in finding bugs/etc, while this was a side benefit it was not the main point). The main point of this beta was to test Microsoft's servers for hosting the game.

Microsoft's Azure hosting platform for games has not been tested at such a large scale before. Other games that use this service, such as Forza on the Xbox One, have not had as many users as Titanfall is expecting right out of the gate (which for Titanfall includes everyone on the Xbox One, Xbox 360, and PC).

While Azure itself can handle the load (it is actually a pretty good Butt Compute infrastructure) the underlying server software infrastructure specifically for games had not been tested prior at the scales expected for Titanfall. Microsoft has hundreds of millions of dollars at stake with this game and they do not want a Simcity style disaster at launch.
